STUDIO: Hannah Golding of Sweet Trash

Hannah Golding makes her kitsch and unique Sweet Trash creations in a studio space tucked away in her spare room and this week she has kindly invited us to have a look around!

My workspace is in a cosy corner of my spare room. I have a large table, a few shelves and piles of fabric and wool ... everywhere. The shelves were added in an attempt to organise myself but sadly that didn't seem to last for long! My laptop's usually in a prominent place playing whatever 4OD has to offer and I've got numerous mannequin torsos and heads dotted about sporting my pom pom hair bands or necklaces. Not to mention various props made for craft fairs and pop-up shops.

 Sweet Trash Work Space

Well, the space started out pretty basic and practical but without meaning to it has become a mecca for kitsch and colour. I make quite a diverse range of jewellery in many different materials so the space tends to change with whatever I'm making.

That would be my wall of pictures and random nick nacks I've collected (hoarded) over the years. If I see a picture, object or shape I like I tend to add it to my wall of stuff. The wall is rapidly becoming one big, random, 80s tastic mood board.

Wall of Nick Nacks

Again, in an attempt to organise myself, I've just put up a notice board with contacts for suppliers, discount codes for online shops etc. It's great to know it's in one place and not written on the back of a magazine or scrap of paper. Also having the room to display my jewellery - in particular my pom pom pieces is important because they can become distorted or damaged in storage.

Notice Board

I usually make my jewellery in the evening after work so it's a great place to lock myself away for a few hours and unwind with some pom pom winding or felt cutting. It's a very busy/messy looking workspace but I find it surprisingly relaxing and inspiring to be surrounded by so much colour and imagery. I think my workspace is definitely a reflection of the way I work and the items I make.
