REVIEW: Sewing Made Simple by Tessa Evelegh

Sewing Made Simple by Tessa Evelegh is a gorgeous and comprehensive book, perfect for a novice sewer. The book is broken down into two main sections: sewing notions and tips, followed by projects designed to teach you new sewing skills.

The first half of the book has information about sewing machines, needles, fastening and the essential stitches you will need. There are detailed pictures along with hints and tips.

There is a very useful section dedicated to The Paper Pattern, which explains all the jargon used on pattern packets as well as how to cut the pattern and adjust them to make the perfect outfit.

My favourite section in the first half is the Fabric Choices. This details how fabric is constructed and then looks at all of the most commonly used fabrics, with gorgeous photos and ideas for how to use them. For a beginner this is a fantastic resource, but I have also found that it has given me some inspiration for using my huge fabric stash!

The projects part of the book is well laid out with clear instructions for each project – instructions are clear with plenty of accompanying images. The list of materials needs are clear.

Each project is designed to teach you a new skill, so there are sections of skill building such as shaping and contouring using darts. The projects vary from clothing to home furnishings so there is plenty to build your skills as a beginner, but a more experienced sewer will also find the projects fun and useful to have a go at.

I am really looking forward to using some of my fabric stash to make up the projects!
